Queen Sized
17 Jul
It’s Saturday afternoon and I’m vegging watching some old movies I rented from the movie store. When I say old I mean old! Put it this way I rented them for $0.50 and $1.00! lol
I came across the movie Queen Sized with Nikki Blonsky (she played in Hairspray). I’ve seen it before on Lifetime TV but wanted to watch it again because I love the message in the movie.
Maggie (Nikki) is the overweight girl that doesn’t fit in at her high school and as a mean prank the skinny, pretty, popular girls nominate Maggie as the homecoming queen. She ends up winning.
The whole message of the movie isn’t about the fact that she won but the fact that she pushed through all the teasing, tormenting, homecoming campaign disasters, her mom being hard on her about her weight, pushing away the people that really truly care about her – her friends – but finding her way back to them, etc. Towards the end of the movie her mom finally realizes that she has been hurting her daughter more by always nagging her about dieting, exercising and how she should do something about her weight.
I think the movie hits home with me just because I’m queen sized too! While I never became homecoming queen (I was asked my senior year in high school if I was interested in being on the ballet and I said no thanks!) I relate with Maggie in so many ways. I remember what it was like all through my school years. It wasn’t pleasant. The teasing was horrible and it’s stuck with me my entire life. That saying sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me isn’t true! Words always end up hurting way more than something physical that will go away after awhile.
If you’re ever bored and looking for a girly chic flick check and see if your local movie store has Queen Sized or pick it up on Amazon

I’ve seen queen sized, and I enjoyed it. It was a little catty at some points, but I remember how frustrating it was to be a fat teenager. it totes sucked.
However, just now, looking at the cover you posted, doesn’t something seem a little…. off? Does Nicki really look that fat in that picture? She looks photo shopped to be thinner.
Yeah it definitely had it’s catty moments! I remember being the fat teenager too
I was thinking the same exact thing you said about her looking thinner in that photo! I definitely think they did some photoshopping!
Hey Tishia, I was never fat as a teenager but always was “a little more” than my skinny friends so I was never teased, actually high school was wonderful for me. It’s NOW that I notice women who are caddy. I was in a public washroom the other day at Stanley Park and this woman looked up at me so I smiled, she just looked at me, stone cold. I found it weird. Anyhow, I do notice people are not as nice to me when I’m fat vs. thin. And how odd is that? seriously, I’m still the same person!
Oh I totally know what you mean about people treating you different when you’re thin versus when you’re heavy! it’s a real reality that a lot of people don’t understand especially if they are thin! I’ve seen and dealt with it and I’ve always questioned why people that liked me when I was thinner didn’t care for me when I started gaining weight and getting big.
You’re homecoming queen in my book!
Nell
eat your peas and love them!
Awh thank you
Thanks for the recommendation, I placed it on my Netflix and will be watching it soon. To be honest I’ve never seen it.
It’s a pretty good movie. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for your comment
I’ve seen the movie on lifetime and loved it for the same reasons you mentioned.
I can’t wait to hit the Hill of Health with you today
Knock, knock! Where did you go??
I miss your updates Tishia. I hope you did’t give up on your goals here – you got so far with it!~
Angela – At the time you posted this I had given up. But I’m back and ready to rock-n-roll again!
Girl are mean in high school regardless of weight. I was the thinnest girl in grade. jr high and awkward looking and teased mercilessly. The teasing stopped in high school after braces and I gained a few lbs. Still I was very thin but pretty in high school. After three kids and packing on the lbs I was teased for being overweight mercilessly by my mother! My mom would always say how fat I have gotten each time I saw her. I have recently lost 45 lbs over the last 2 years and I am 20 away from goal weight it has taken so long but slow and steady is the game in weight loss it took me years to gain it and it is taking a long time to lose it. I am the same person thin or fat but agree if you look differnent too skinny or too fat people treat you differently. I used to scarf cookies and knowone said anything until I got fat and then it was like um really are you gonna eat a cookie!
