Three Benefits of Stretching

27 Jan

Stretching is definitely something I need to work on more. Since I’ve started exercising recently I haven’t been taking the time to do any stretches beforehand and I can definitely feel the muscle tension and soreness. Most people know what stretching is but just in case let’s start with a basic definition of it.

Streching:

To draw out or extend (oneself, a body, limbs, wings, etc.) to the full length or extent (often fol. by out): to stretch oneself out on the ground. -Dictionary.com

Stretching is easy. You do it in everyday activities like bending over to pick up something off the floor, reaching for something on the top shelf, etc. But, let’s talk about stretching in terms of exercising.

Stretching needs to be a part of your regular exercise routine. In fact it’s essential that you take the time to stretch before exercising. This will warm your muscles up and to help prepare your body for a more rigorous activity. Stretching before exercising will help prevent injuries too.

How Long Should You Stretch?

There isn’t a set in stone answer for this question. However, it is recommended that the ideal length of time for stretching is 10 minutes. This gives your body enough time to warm up, loosen up and be prepared for more strenuous movements.

While there are many benefits to stretching here are three main ones.

1. Range of Movement Increases
Stretching on a regular basis increases the length of your muscles and tendons which in turn increases your range of movement.

2. Injury Prevention
Stretching helps to prevent injury to your joints, muscles and tendons. When the muscles and tendons are well-flexed this will help in a faster recovery and decreased soreness. The muscles of the body will be able to take more exhausting and rigorous movements with less probability of being injured.

3. Reduce Muscle Tension
If you stretch regularly (and before working out) this will help them to be less likely to contract – causing pain.

Stretching has great benefits and doesn’t take more than 10 minutes. Do what it takes to keep the body healthy and that includes taking the time to stretch.

Stretching has always been one of those things that I know I should be doing, but just never (or rarely) do. And when I do stretch, it’s usually kind of half-hearted, just going through the motions.

You have some really great points here. I guess I need to start doing what I already knew was good for me!
