Walking For Exercise
16 Mar
Wow! I can’t believe that I have actually accomplished some walking for exercise. You’re probably laughing and thinking ok walking is no big deal, it’s just an every day ordinary thing. Well for me it’s not!
Over on my Adventures of a Single WAHM blog I shared a story about the last time I tried walking for exercise (it was back in November when I was 30 pounds heavier) and how sad and pathetic it was. To make a long story short I barely made it 100 steps from my house when my legs gave out on me & I fell! I sat on the side of the road (mind you I had 2 dogs with me too & they just looked at me like ‘are you serious’!) and cried and hated myself and was completely humiliated when a car drove by!
And all I can say now is baby I’ve come a long way! Of course being 30 pounds lighter helps a LOT! For two days now my son and I have went out and walked 3 miles! So the last two days I’ve clocked 6 miles!
Coming from the fatty that back in November collapsed on a walk of about 100 steps, 6 miles in 2 days is stinking FANTABULOUS! Yeah me! And even cooler? I hardly broke a sweat and didn’t huff & puff at all!!!!! And get this – the first part of the walk is UP hill (not a lot of the walk is up hill but starting out going up hill is kind of no fun! lol).
My mom and I are doing a local 5k race/walk on April 24th so I’m working on getting myself prepared for that. I had to giggle at myself because I thought 5k meant 5 miles (haha it’s just a little over 3 miles – air head moment to say the least or what can I say I sucked at math & still do to this day!).
So even crazier than walking 6 miles in 2 days and signing up to do a 5k run/walk next month?
I’ve set a goal that next year (2011) I’ll RUN the entire 5k race/walk that we’re doing next month. I seriously can’t believe that I’m going to end up running. Never in a million years did I ever think there would come a day that I WANTED to run but I want to do it. It’s just a matter of starting slow and I’m so clueless when it comes to this whole running thing! I guess I’ll just start off jogging in like 1 minute intervals or something like that. I don’t know.
So, do you do walking for exercise too?

It’s great what you done. I don’t walk. I only walk to go to work, maybe a 10-15 minutes fast. But last month I bought an elliptical and I do it each day. 10 minutes each day. But yesterday and tonight I did 20 minutes. I could take the time to walk but I don’t like to walk alone and if I walk with my son and my boyfriend, my son will be too slow for us.

20 minutes on the elliptical is great! I have a love/hate relationship with ellipticals. LOL
Oh yea, you know me, I love walking! But jogging/running is quite the struggle for me. I’m on week 6 of running and I’m still doing the 1:3 intervals which is run/jog one minute and walk 3 minutes. I have done a ton of research on running because we are doing the 1/2 marathon portion of the Reggae Marathon (13.1 miles). At this time, I cannot see myself doing it but hopefully I’ll get there. I have a long way to go and a lot of training ahead of me up until Dec. that is for sure.
As mentioned on your Facebook page, being fit for a good pair of running (not walking) shoes is the best investment you could make for yourself. Running shoes are more flexible and are actually lighter than heavy and stiff walking shoes. If you can’t get a running shoe at this time, I wouldn’t start jogging yet because you could really hurt yourself.
Happy walking! I can’t wait to hear about your 5k as I’ll be training for one here soon myself. I would ultimately like to get in 2 5k’s before the 1/2 marathon.
So proud of you for walking 2 days so far. Keep up the great work!

Thanks Angie! I’ll be getting fit on Tuesday for some shoes. It’s going to be weird. I’m not used to getting fit for shoes. I actually am not sure that I’ve ever had it done – well except as a child. lol
re: mileage
I once had a runner tell me that if you can do it in a week, then you can do it in a day. You walked 6 miles in two days? Then you’ll definitely be ready for the 5k!

I never thought of it like that before (if you can do it in a week you can do it in a day)! Thanks for sharing that
When I first started my journey in September ’08, I started small – go for a walk, use the ball to do some exercises along with a DVD, jump on a rebounder. Eventually, I started walking more, using the elliptical, and strength training – most of this started when I began working w/ my trainer. Eventually, I began running. Start small and work your way up – you’re well on your way, Tishia!
Thanks Erin. I definitely started small when it comes to exercising – for the longest time I wasn’t (couldn’t) doing anything other than my Wii Fit Plus. This walking thing came just out of the blue and then the whole having an urge to run – I have NO clue where that’s coming from! LOL
I have been trying to get back into walking, which is weird because I walked a half marathon last summer which was a ton of fun! So I know I can do it, it’s just a matter of finding the motivation to get going *sigh*
Anyways, I love reading about your journey and keep up the good work. You can definitely do the 5K easy

How far is a half marathon? I love walking and can’t wait to start jogging next! Thanks for your comment
