Five Days of Weight Watchers and No Loss

18 Apr

I’m trying to not be frustrated but I am.At first, I wasn’t even going to share this post because it feels like I’ve been so negative and Debbie Downer lately and that’s not who or what I want people to think of me as. But, on the other hand I’ve strongly believed in being honest about the struggles and triumphs I have during the long difficult roller coaster of a ride called weight loss. So, with that being said I decided to share it and be honest about where I’m at.

I have issues with the scale and I’m really obsessive over it. I’ve been weighing myself every single day and I’ve been so frustrated the last several days because the scale has shown a gain every single day!

I don’t get it. I’ve followed the program to a T. I’ve started exercising, although I haven’t done it as frequently as I should. So, why is there no loss?

I was accused of cheating on the program. I haven’t. I’ve counted every bite of everything I’ve taken. The one thing I’ve done wrong? Being under my allowed daily points for several of those 5 days. Not by a lot – 8 on one day, 9 on another day and 2 on another day.

I have noticed that I’ve been retaining water or something lately. My feet and fingers have been super swollen and puffy. I’m drinking quite a bit of water, although there was 1 day that I didn’t drink any water – nothing but Diet Coke – so I’m not sure what this is about. I did have homemade chicken noodle soup 2 days so maybe the sodium from that has something to do with it. Plus I’ve been eating lunch meat for lunch pretty much every day and I know that has quite a bit of sodium in it also.

I know this is a really bad attitude to have but right now I’m so frustrated I just feel like what’s the point of eating healthy and not allowing myself to indulge in any of the crap that I like if I’m not going to lose any weight anyways? I’m in a bad spot – with my attitude – and trying to talk myself into NOT just throwing in the towel and giving up because that’s where I’m at right now….sigh

As I type this I’m trying to talk myself out of this mood and this attitude. I don’t want to just give up again. I want to keep plugging along but it’s so hard to find the motivation to keep going when you’ve been working hard at something and aren’t seeing any results!

On another note – I’ve made it 10 days without a binging purging episode that’s a triumph to share and be proud of!

The no binging and purging is the biggest deal. That’s huge and an important success!
I know what you’re describing and I haven’t been able to withstand that kind of disappointment myself.
I didn’t know you drank diet coke, but if you just stopped that one thing, you might drop some water weight quickly. It’s so hard on your body.
    And keep exercising, that’s great.
I wish you could take a break from that stinking scale.
I’m rooting for you and I hope you get some good numbers soon.
For sure you’re bloated if you’re fingers, etc are showing it. So know that it’s just that. You can’t be gaining on the diet you’re on. Things will equilibrate soon.
And I’m not sure, but isn’t there some re-balancing necessary after stopping the purging?
Be nice to yourself. Feel the love around you.
Here’s a big hug coming at you!!!

This is the 3rd time I’m writing this comment. For some reason when I hit reply to comment back it won’t show up. But if I reply to the last comment on the page it works fine. Grrr sometimes technology…lol

Anyways – thank you for always being so encouraging and positive Teresa :-) I appreciate that more than you know!

Yes, I hope it’s just my body rebalancing itself or something like that!

The reason you are gaining weight is because you are exercising. Stop exercising for at least two weeks if you were never exercising before. When you work the muscles they collect fluid or inflammation. So lay off the exercise for a while. Everyone likes to go at a diet gun ho with everything at once.
The other reason you may be gaining weight is because WW is a point system based on calories. You can consume all your calories if you want of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates cause inflammation in the body causing you to retain fluid. So it’s not that your program is bad it’s just not motivating when you see a weight gain or no weight loss at all.

Take Shape for life is a protein based prepackaged program that keeps the dieting part simple, you always lose weight so it keeps you motivate. It’s costs a lot less, its very easy and you get free counseling from a Health Coach like me. The question that you asked would be one that I discuss with my clients before they start.

      I hope this helps.

I’ve been following along and don’t comment much. I did a while back when you were talking about going to an OA meeting. I remember your post saying that there wasn’t one in your are any longer. I just wanted to share something with you that I’ve recently discovered in my area.
There is a group called Celebrate Recovery that is a Christian version of a 12 step program, but has 8 “healing choices” they call them, instead of steps.
I don’t know where your spiritual beliefs are, but I thought you may find it useful. I’ve been going through the book and a workbook (The books is called “Life’s Healing Choices”) and meeting with a group of 5 other ladies once a week. I haven’t checked out a larger celebrate recovery group that’s meets regularly, though I have checked to see if they are in my area.

I have gained TREMENDOUS insight as to why I turn to food and am finding lots of healing that I had a hard time working through in OA.

I’d be happy to answer any questions you might have. You could even check the book out at the library, just to get an idea about it.

Keep looking forward! You are doing very important work!
    You’re in my prayers!

Hi Stacey! I am a Christian. I actually started the Celebrate Recovery program at my old church but for several different reasons I didn’t keep going. At my new church they offer it as well but it’s on Thursday nights and it’s hard for me to do anything in the evenings right now because I have my son to take care of and do homework with and all that jazz. I plan on joining the group this summer after my son moves in with his dad and step mom :-)

Ok, I just realized I put the link to celebrate recovery in Australia!
    Sorry!
I’m trying to find one where you can search my states in the U.S!

Chicken noodle soup is a killer…low in calories high in sodium. I weighed 2 more lbs today than yesterday and I had a really great eating day and just one bowl of soup!!

For some reason none of my comments that I wrote back to you guys are showing up :-(

    • admin 18. Apr, 2011 at 8:42 pm #

Jodie – That’s the bad thing about soups. I love them but the sodium is so high in them!

I think it’s important to remember that this is a life long process….so one week in the grand scheme of things is pretty insignificant. Sure, it sucks right now that you’re in the middle of it, but when you’re looking at the Big Picture…it’s just one little week in your whole entire life. Every day that you make healthy choices – no matter if it results in pounds lost or not – takes you that much closer to the healthy life you want to lead. :)

Tishia congratulations on the not binging and purging…I am very proud of you for that. Please do nice things for your body. I don’t want to sound like I am nagging but the diet coke is just a killer. That stuff is really not going to help you in any way. If you can’t give it up, do it gradually, but make sure some of your liquid intake is water, it will help with getting rid of some of the sodium. It is going to take time, and if you continue to do what is healthy the numbers will take care of themselves…

TISH, the very first thing I wondered when I read the TITLE of this post was, “What’s your sodium intake looking like?” I had not read your post, but that was the first thing that popped into my head.

Second, CONGRATS on not binging/purging. That is a huge WIN and you are a rockstar!

If you like soup, maybe make a huge batch of your own and freeze it in individual containers? I do that with my chili, as well as my chicken soup. I don’t have to rely on canned soup anymore!

Keep drinking water, add a lemon slice – that helps me when I’ve had a lot of sodium.

    You can do it, Tish!

Can you post your log? I might be able to help if I see everything you are eating and drinking throughout the day. And not to sound weird but I mean literally everything if it goes in write it down.

Carolea is right- your weight gain may be down to exercise- when you build muscle you can put on weight as lean tissue weighs more than fat. Instead of stopping your activity however, I’d encourage you to continue with it. What is most significant here is a loss in body fat- something that you are likely to be experiencing. Try not to be overly concerned with any small gains on the scales- any extra weight will drop of with continued exercise. If you stop exercising, your metabolic rate will drop, making it harder to lose pounds without drastically reducing your calorie intake- something that I would not recommend as a long term solution. Good luck!
