A friend invited me to join Curves with her. We made plans to go check them out today, not thinking about it being a holiday. I don’t really need to ‘check’ them out – I was a member at one several years ago. I liked it but didn’t like it.

I liked it was only women working out. I didn’t like they made me sign a one year contract – I wasted a ton of money because I didn’t go for the full year. I liked it was only a 30 minute workout. I didn’t like the constant moving from machine to machine with walking in place on a wood board between each machine.

So, why am I considering joining again? Because I miss this friend & it will allow us to see each other every morning. Because I am so unhealthy that I can’t even handle walking a block right now – Curves would be an “easy” transition into physical activity. Because I need some accountability & having a friend do it with me would be that accountability I need.

But, I’m not sure I want to be “trapped” in a contract again! One of the things I didn’t like about Curves last time was that once I lost some weight & built up some endurance their program/equipment didn’t give me the workout I needed.

So…I’m kind of up in the air. My friend & I have coupons that are supposed to give each of us 30 days free…but we’ll see what strings are attached because you know damn well there will be strings attached.

    I hear ya! I like it/I don’t like it. If you’re like me, you gotta let it flow and get outside that comfort zone. It’s a year. I’ve been going to water exercise three times a week for over a year. I like it/I don’t like it. I hate getting up early. I can think of one million reasons not to go. But, I go. I think we’re sort of worth it!

      Hi Donna. I started going. I disliked it just as much as I did before. And then I ended up hurting my back so had to stop going. Thankfully it was during the 30 day free trial so I didn’t have any money invested. And it actually worked out because I can’t afford the monthly fee plus their join fee that I would have to start paying next month. Winter is coming and my gas bills are $98 a month…and for a little 1 bedroom apartment that’s ridiculous so I shouldn’t have even been entertaining the idea of joining Curves knowing winter was coming & I was already tight financially & things are about to get even tighter now that’s it getting colder and colder in lovely Northern Michigan (yeah, I use the term lovely loosely LOL)

      How do you like the water exercise class? I thought about doing that too but even that can get expensive…it’s 4 bucks a pop so if I wanted to go 2-3 times a week that would add up pretty quick too!

        I love the class. It keeps me honest. The cool thing is that a lot of the people in the class are a lot older than me and I see them as my heroes!

        Money is always an issue, but I figure money I spend on one thing is money I’m not spending on junk food. I cook from scratch almost always, but I like cooking. I did invest in a freezer because I want to take advantage of the sales and freeze stuff that I make. I don’t know how to cook for one or two 🙂

          I’m so glad to hear you love the class Donna! It’s easier to workout when we enjoy what we’re doing. I’ve heard that the water aerobics class here is full of older women too. But yeah, I think that could be a good thing – a reminder that age doesn’t have to keep us from doing something!

  2. I think having a buddy to go with, and someone you actually want to see is a great motivator to get out and get some exercise in. Keep your head up!

      Hi Lily Fluffbottom. Having a “friend” wasn’t a motivator. I put friend in quotes for a reason…long story but let’s just say there’s a reason we haven’t seen each other in almost 6 months. It was a reminder to me that people come into your life for a reason but they also ‘leave’ your life for a reason. We are in very different places in our lives and it was kind of “awkward” seeing her. But I hurt my back a few days into going and had to stop so it was only a few days of awkwardness.

    I know that this post was last year but i thought i would comment for people who come across this page.
    After losing 30 kgs i have found myself a fitness addict, i use curves on my days where i go and do a half hour pilates class. My curves has me on a ‘cancel anytime’ policy and they are really great at getting us moving in the ‘rest’ spots. The idea of curves is that you use both opposing muscles in the one machine and then use the spots inbetween as a rest. I burn the same amount of calories in a curves workout that i do in a normal workout at my other gym, try doing things like jumping up and down or doing high knees or step side to side. Curves can be really great if you use your imagination with moves. They also do Zumba at my curves so if they do that at yours go and do it because it is so so so so fun and a great workout.
