Smoothies Here I Come

I’ve really been thinking about juicing lately. I tried it quite awhile ago with a friend when I was visiting her for a few weeks. My biggest ‘complaint’ about the juicing was that it was expensive – it took a lot of fruits/veggies just to get 1 glass of juice. But the recipes we made were pretty good. Oh, another ‘complaint’ I had about it – it was messy! lol

So, anyways…it’s not in my budget to buy a juicer right now. I checked out the Jack LaLone one at Wal-Mart (and have heard a few people mention it) but it’s $99 and that just isn’t in the budget right now. I figured I could start with smoothies seems how I have a blender that never gets used unless my son makes milk shakes in it 😉

I made a late evening run to Wal-Mart last night to pick up some ingredients to get me through 5 day of smoothies this week (for breakfast).  And honestly I’m not so sure that smoothies are going to be much cheaper than juicing would be! It cost me $36 to get stuff for 5 days of smoothies! And that isn’t something I can afford every single week – definitely not in my budget to spend that kind of money each week on smoothies.

Okay, so here is one of the first smoothies I made to kick off this week…

fruit smoothie recipeKiwi-Strawberry Smoothie Recipe

1 1/4 cups cold apple juice
1 ripe banana, sliced
1 kiwifruit, sliced
5 frozen strawberries
1 1/2 teaspoons honey

In a blender, combine the juice, banana, kiwifruit, strawberries, and honey. Blend until smooth.

My thoughts:

Not sure I’m going to like doing smoothies. The seeds in it really bugged me. Plus it left some sort of really strange feeling in my mouth – I don’t even know how to explain it. And I mutilated the Kiwi-fruit (guess I should learn how to prepare one before using it next time!) so there were only 2 ity bity pieces that actually made it into the blender. I also just realized I forgot to add the honey!  I guess I’m on the fence about this smoothie recipe. Don’t hate it. But don’t really care for it either.

    Hey Tishia I buy the frozen bags of fruit at WalMart that are chopped into chunks. They are usually around six dollars or so but sometimes on sale for $3 so you could stock up when they go on sale.

    Then again on sale you could grab something like frozen yogurt if you want to make it a little more creamy.

    Then add a banana or whatever for a few dollars.

    I like to use Almond Milk or Coconut Milk which are a little pricy but you could just use juice or regular milk.

    Just some options for you if you still feel like making some smoothies, they don’t HAVE to be really pricy and when you buy frozen stuff it lasts long. (you could also freeze the bananas in chunks, too).

      Thanks for taking the time to comment 🙂 I recently did find a few bags of fruit on sale at walMart that I picked up and put in my freezer. Never thought of trying frozen yogurt in a smoothie – great idea!

    Hello! I just recently found your blog and I was really excited to see the post on smoothies/juicing. I have done juice fasts before and overall love the results and the juice, but have to agree…WAY too expensive and the mess gets old really fast. No matter how I go about it, it’s just messy. Last week I tried doing “green” smoothies for the first time and the result wasn’t too bad. Last week I did 1 cup frozen mixed berries from Costco, 3/4 cup plain greek yogurt, 1 cup unsweetened Silk Coconut Milk, 1/8 cup ground flax, 1 teaspoon matcha green tea powder, 1 teaspoon spirulina powder, and a dash of cinnamon. It turned out really good! I’m not a fan of the seeds either, but you get used to them fast, and if you make it really smooth, you can drink it through a larger straw, like the kind at McDonalds…you can buy those at a Cash N Carry or restaurant supply store. This week I changed it up, and mixed an Atkins Vanilla protein shake, 1 cup berries, and 1 banana with the powders and flax and that was really good too! Good luck! Stop by my page sometime too!
